At SIGGRAPH 2003 being held in San Diego, California, BiTMICRO Networks announced the availability of the E-Disk SafeCapacity software suite to complement its E-Disk solid state storage product line.
In most storage systems, a small set of data files account for a disproportionately large amount of disk input and output (I/O). When identified, these "hot" files will most often be database log files, heavily hit indices and tables -- all candidates for migration to solid state storage. SafeCapacity-Hotfile determines the most often accessed files and displays a list of these files in a descending order of access
.
The software is loaded on a database or application server to record statistics about the occurrences of file access such as the read, write, and combination of reads and writes statistics. The resulting report of file names and their location becomes an invaluable tool to system administrators for SSD capacity planning and performance optimization.
Using SafeCapacity-Migration, administrators transparently relocate these hot files to the fastest storage available in their environment. Migrating hot files to Fibre Channel, Ultra SCSI or ATA / IDE E-Disk, E-DiskSAN or E-DiskNAS solid state storage delivers a 100% hit ratio.
