Each year, Siggraph sponsors an Electronic Theater, a 90-minute juried showcase of the world's best graphics work. Only 26 of 635 submissions made it into this year's screening, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The event unspools nightly at the convention. Tickets come with full registration or may be purchased separately, and the lines that queue for general-admission seating are worthy of a Radiohead concert. Standouts this year include nVidia's showstopping glimpse of real-time animation hardware, the latest graphics craze.
In addition to the Electronic Theater selections, 50 clips will screen as part of Siggraph's Animation Theater, which unrolls continuously all day
. While many works for both showcases were submitted by universities, entertainment companies contributed half of the Electronic Theater entries and 18 of the Animation Theater clips. Potential visual effects Oscar contenders making the cut include Industrial Light + Magic (Warner Bros. Pictures' "Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines," Universal's "The Hulk"), ESC (Warners' "The Matrix Reloaded"), Rhythm & Hues (Fox's "Daredevil") and Cinesite (Fox's "X2: X-Men United").
