L-3 Electron Devices, a division of L-3 Communications, announced that its Constant Efficiency Amplifier (CEA 130) has gone live on the air. WDSE Public Television in Duluth, Minn., installed a new CEA 130-enabled digital transmitter and began broadcasting with it on April 28, 2003.
The patented broadcasting technology allows broadcasters to achieve as much as twice the power efficiency of standard IOTs and providing unprecedented cost-savings for the overall digital broadcasting industry
. By combining IOT and Multi-Stage Depressed Collector (MSDC) technologies for superior electron collection efficiency, the CEA 130 reduces power consumption by about one-half compared with other electron tube or solid-state technology. Correctable average power output of 30 kW has been demonstrated. The collector is oil-cooled using Poly Alpha Olefin oil, which allows operation at high average power.
In addition to supplying transmitter tubes to the television industry,
Electron Devices is a worldwide supplier of microwave power devices to all major prime contractors on key military programs, including missile seekers, aircraft navigation and landing systems, airborne and ground radars and electronic warfare and communications systems.
