2003 – 2004 Primetime Emmy Awards Nominations Announced
By Elina Shatkin, July 22, 2004

Nominations for the 56th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards for the period of June 1, 2003 through May 31, 2004, were announced on July 15 by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. The awards presentation will be televised by ABC on Sunday, September 19. This year's Emmy telecast will be hosted by Garry Shandling.

On Sunday, September 12, 59 awards “categories” (a single award) and “areas” (possibility of one, more than one or no award) will be handed out at a black-tie presentation co-chaired by Michael Hoey and John Moffitt. Additional awards may also be given for the three "juried areas" (no nominations) of Costumes for a Variety or Music Program, Voice-Over Performance and Individual Achievement in Animation

. Additional awards may also be given for Engineering Development, Interactive Television Programming and the Governors Award. These awards, if any, will be announced later this month.

Nominations were made by active Academy members who voted for programs and other peer categories of their expertise. For example, performers, in addition to voting for programs, voted for performers, while writers voted for writers, directors for directors, etc. Peer panels made up of active Academy members will screen nominations during the month of August and, in secret ballot, select the Emmy winners.
