Pixel Power Ltd., Cambridge, England announced the first technology demonstration of full character generator functionality within a DVB ASI stream. The ASI stream based graphics generator is intended for local graphics insertion at cable head ends, terrestrial broadcasting distribution centers and playout facilities. It offers similar functionality to Pixel Power's established Clarity range of character generator systems with the ability to share graphic assets throughout a broadcast organization.
Local graphics insertion offers new revenue stream opportunities but has hitherto been too costly to implement, requiring expensive decode to baseband and recoding with the consequent loss of quality
. The Pixel Power streaming character generator uses proprietary technology to insert high quality graphics in the ASI stream without attendant degradation.
Pixel Power's Clarity is a family of powerful, multi-format, single and multi-channel graphics systems addressing the character generation, still/clip store and animated graphics requirements of television broadcasters and post-production. Offered in combinations of standard and high definition formats, there are even Clarity models that can simulcast both standard and high definition from a single system.
The technology is expected to ship in Q2 2005.
