The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences on Friday chose the seven films that will face off for this year's visual effects Oscar nominations. The films vying for Oscar nods are: "The Aviator,'' "The Day After Tomorrow," "I, Robot,'' "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban,'' "Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events," "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow'' & "Spider-Man 2." Two of the year's most effects-driven pictures were noticeably absent from the list: "Van Helsing" and "The Polar Express."
Henrik Fett, a visual effects supervisor & producer at Look Effects, saw a common theme in the Academy's choices
. "It seems to be focusing on effects as a storytelling tool, rather than as a standalone item," he told Variety. "It's about the effects being used as just another tool in the toolbox, and it looks like that's what the Academy is trying to promote."
