ETC-USC and ISA Screen First European Feature Mastered at 4K
By Roland Marquez, September 14, 2006

The ETC-USC and ISA will screen "Paris je t'aime," the first European film mastered in 4K resolution, at 7 pm on Wednesday, September 20 at the Hollywood Pacific Theatre. The screening from ISA, a consortium of eight French digital cinema companies, will showcase how French professionals can provide digital motion picture content according to DCI Specifications and SMPTE Standards. "Paris je t'aime" is the first feature film fully scanned in 6K and mastered in 4K in Europe. Encoding the image took about 24 hours per reel. Éclair Laboratories produced the Digital Intermediate (DI), 4K Master and Digital Cinema Package (DCP).

"Paris je t'aime" is a collection of twenty love stories by renowned international filmmakers inspired by the twenty "arrondissements" of Paris. It opened the Un Certain Regard section of the 2006 Cannes Film Festival

. The film's directors include Alfonso Cuarón, Gurinder Chadha, Gus Van Sant, Joel & Ethan Coen, Tom Tykwer, Walter Salles, Wes Craven, Sylvain Chomet and Gerard Depardieu.

Smartjog’s secure satellite and terrestrial network will transmit the 4K DCP directly to the theatre. There, the 2K images will be extracted from the 4K file and English subtitles will be overlaid onto the final projected footage in accordance with DCI specs. A 2K Christie DLP projector and a Doremi server will be used to show the film.

Following the screening, there will be a Q&A with guest speakers Bob Lambert, Corporate Sr. VP. of Worldwide Technology Strategy at Disney and the current chair of the ETC-USC Executive Board; Pierre Lavoix, Administrator of the CST; Christiane Ducasse, Director of Sales, SmartJog; and Philippe Reinaudo, CTO of Éclair Laboratories.

Admission to the screening is restricted to film and television union and guild members, entertainment companies' employees, film teachers and students. Proof of affiliation is required to enter. Attendees may invite one guest.

The screening will be held at the Hollywood Pacific Theatre, 6433 Hollywood Boulevard, Hollywood, CA 90028.
