Digital Production Buzz Covers Editing American Idol, The Phantom HD Camera, and Creating World Class Visual Effects
By Staff, April 3, 2008

The current episode of Creative Planets Digital Production BuZZ features American Idol assistant editor Carlos Verdugo, filmmaker/author/trainer Noah Kadner, and Mark Glaser, founder of Sway Studio.

Carlos Verdugo, an assistant editor for American Idol discusses the workflow behind the scenes of the hit show. Everything were shooting now is in DVCPro HD, Verdugo explains. The process getting to that is probably the most interesting one because since its a live show, all our post facilities are on stage at CBS and so we actually digitize everything from the live show straight into the Avid bays there. They can actually cut everything right when the show ends.

Noah Kadner, founder of interactive training and production company Call Box (www.callboxlive.com), gives us his take on the Phantom HD, the high-speed camera recently introduced by Vision Research, Inc. Its doing something you cant do with a film camera and thats shoot extremely high-speed and see it instantly, noted Kadner. This is a pretty revolutionary camera.

Award-wining digital artist Mark Glaser discusses visual effects in the world of automotive advertising. Sway Studio (www.swaystudio.com), the company he founded, has a world-class reputation for photo-realistic CG work

. Our capability allows us to do things you couldnt do in the real world, or more efficiently and cost-effectively than you could do in the real world, Glaser says. With the CAD data, whats really interesting is we can start generating consumer demand for vehicles that havent even hit the production line yet. They dont have to build expensive prototypes.
