this summer: The Philanthropist for NBC and Royal Pains for USA. The title sequence for The Philanthropist debuted on NBC July 1. The Royal Pains sequence debuted on June 11 on USA.
The Philanthropist title sequence gives a whirlwind tour of the life of the show's namesake character, Teddy Rist (James Purefoy). From a limo in New York to a village in Kosovo to his private jet to a Nigerian jungle, we meet a character who doesn't hesitate to do what it takes to help people.
The Royal Pains sequence subtly combines characters and back story very abstractly. The New York skyline dissolves into water and we meet the star, Dr. Hank Lawson (Mark Feuerstein), and the other principal cast members underwater, floating with bejeweled medical instruments. Suddenly Dr. Hank bursts out of the water to find himself standing at the edge of a swimming pool at a glorious Hamptons estate. He turns to take in the ocean view and finds that he's been "born" into a new life.
For both projects, Big Film Design worked with the shows' producers to combine original material designed by BFD with clips from the show to create unique graphic environments.
Manhattan-based BFD is best known for feature film titles and visual effects (Burn After Reading, Revolutionary Road, Doubt) but has also created other television openings, such as 30 Rock.
