Agency Engine Company 1 turned to Kaboom and director/editor Doug Werby to produce two spots that showcase the services available at Tyler Heart Institute at the Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula (CHOMP) in Monterey, Calif. Amazing stories of healing, the Monterey Bay area's intrinsic beauty, and Canon's EOS 5D camera were key elements in the one-day shoot.

"At the end of the day, a hospital is judged on the results it produces for its patients," says Scott Aal, who, along with Vince Engel, served as creative director on the CHOMP spots. "We wanted to focus on healthy people living fulfilling lives, versus the more typical hospital spots that focus on doctors or technology. Doug and Kaboom helped us communicate this in a simple, beautiful way, working with a very limited budget."

The spots—"Beautiful Sight" and "Heartbeats"—reflect CHOMP's focus on individualized care and treating patients as people. One spot centers on a single swimmer in Monterey Bay; the other recalls the number of heartbeats in different stages of life.
Director Werby wanted a filmic, photographic feel for both spots, but he needed the flexibility to shoot a lot of footage in multiple locations in one day. To that end, he researched the Canon EOS 5D, a digital SLR camera that shoots HD video. He and director of photography Norman Bonney decided this camera would be a great choice do to the type of lensing they desired—including very selective focus for "Heartbeats" and a wide open nature vista for "Beautiful Sight."
For "Heartbeats," Werby wanted the film to feel appropriate for that time period: On the youth sequences, Werby and Bonney employed Super 8mm film for handheld, home-movie-style footage that feels authentic and classic. These approaches, matched with Werby's acumen for real people casting and direction, resulted in two spots that are quietly powerful.
