Iron Maiden's 2008 tour, "Somewhere Back in Time," revisits a seminal period in the band's history. Mixing the old with the new, videographer Johnny B convinced the band to capture, edit and distribute footage of this revolutionary look back using a completely tapeless workflow centered on Sonnet Technologies Fusion F2 portable storage systems and Apple MacBook Pro laptop computers.

FCP for The Forbidden Kingdom: DigitalFilm Tree Grows Its Tapeless Workflow
The creators of the martial arts movie The Forbidden Kingdom brought two of the genre's top attractions—Jackie Chan and Jet Li—together for the first time on screen. This is certainly a significant event for their fans, but behind the scenes, Hollywood-based postproduction facility and consulting company DigitalFilm Tree had to bring together disparate technical elements to facilitate the project's editorial. The film, which was directed by Rob Minkoff, edited by Eric Strand and shot by Peter Pau, was the first major feature shot on mainland China with the Panavision Genesis.

Posting RED: Post Workflow Options for the RED ONE Camera
In two short years, Oakley founder Jim Jannard has piloted RED Digital Cinema from an unknown upstart to an industry force. Unofficially, buyers have reserved more than 3,500 cameras, of which several hundred are now out in the wild. If everything is on track, I estimate that by year’s end, RED Digital Cinema will have shipped around 3,000 of its innovative RED ONE cameras. Many in the industry scoffed at first—especially those with a vested interest in competing high-end cameras like the Sony HDW-F900 and F23, the ARRI D-20 and the Grass Valley Viper—but RED ONE is proving itself out in the field, providing VFX shots on Wanted and Jumper, as well as 100 percent of the acquisition on Steven Soderbergh’s Guerilla, The Argentine and The Informant. In addition, the directing team that brought you Crank is also shooting Game as an all-RED feature film production. Not to mention many lower-profile productions ranging from commercials and music videos to small indie film projects.

School's In Session: Making Charlie Bartlett
When you think of teen comedies and coming-of-age stories, classics like Ferris Bueller's Day Off and Risky Business might come to mind, but there haven't been many recent films that are held in the same regard. Charlie Bartlett, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival might change that. It has been picked up by MGM and is slated for a Feb. 22 release.
