The Unbearable Lightness: Weighing in on ikan's Camera Cradle
An obvious advantage of smaller camcorders with 1/2-inch, 1/3-inch or smaller sensors is their compact size and light weight-particularly when traveling by commercial airline or when covering a long event solo with many setups. However, lightness can be a disadvantage when shooting from a tripod without the downward pull of gravity that comes with greater mass. For that reason, smaller camcorders and lenses are usually equipped with built-in stabilization or shake compensation. While this helps with short duration wider shots, you need a tripod or something comparable for prolonged shots—particularly if they're on the telephoto side. That's where the Camera Cradle from ikan Corp. comes in.

RED for Real: Unlocking the Mysterious Mysterium
When I heard about the RED ONE project in 2005, I was tremendously excited about the possibility. Here was a camera that was doing everything I'd been writing about and hoped someone would do, offering the ability to shoot RAW footage with a modular, tapeless, flexible, affordable camera.
Less than two years after the company posted its first simple Web page on red.com, RED has shipped its first batch of cameras. Jim Jannard, founder of RED Digital Cinema (and founder/chairman of eyewear and apparel maker Oakley), was kind enough to let me come out to Lake Forest, Calif., in late August for the delivery of the first cameras.

Sony's PDW-F350 XDCAM HD Camcorder
I evaluated the first XDCAM Professional Disc camcorder almost three years ago. But last year, Sony announced XDCAM HD as part of its CineAlta line. I had to see the improvements for myself. Sony provided a PDW-F350 camcorder ($25,800) with a Canon KH21ex5.7 IRSE lens ($26,000) for evaluation. Canon and Fujinon supply a range of native 1/2-inch HD lenses, so the total cost of your package will vary. (A less expensive PDW-F330 is available, but it has fewer features.)

Everything is Illuminated: Experiments with the JVC HZ-CA13U PL-Mount Cine Lens Adapter
The JVC HZ-CA13U optional PL-mount lens adapter for the 1/3-inch bayonet mount of the company's ProHD line of HDV camcorders will be available at NAB this month. The adapter enables the use of 16mm film prime lenses with a PL mount and retains the angle of view and depth of field characteristics of 16mm film. Loss of transmittance is less than half a stop.
